![]() ![]() Travels go further beyond, from the squalid hell of the River of Blood, to the utterly alien architecture of the Nightmare Frontier. Meanwhile the game's art direction is some of the best in the industry, with the city of Yharnam and its surrounding environs beautifully and hauntingly realized, as we scour its streets for answers. What few flaws the game has, such as the occasional less-than-stellar boss or the limitations of the blood gem customization system, are but small marks in the grand scheme of things. The new chalice dungeons, while not perfect in execution, can offer hundreds of hours of fresh gameplay for those willing to plunge into their endless depths. ![]() The new dash dodge feels more satisfying than ever, and boss battles are at some of their best, from nimble fighters, to frenzied beasts, towering monstrosities and everything between. The iconic trick weapons are nearly all unique in moveset, offering a huge variety of weapons for the player to select from. It takes the gameplay template established by Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and places a twist on it, opting for a more melee-focused direction. Setting, story and theme would have been enough to endear me to it alone, but Bloodborne's gameplay and art direction is as sublime as its craftsmanship, if not more so, and really take it above and beyond to be one of the greats. It is more than just my favorite rpg, but my favorite game of all time. It is not content to recycle the century old ideas of Lovecraft and other writers, but charts a bold new course for its genre with its own setting, themes and inhabitants. Bloodborne perfectly escalates from the player's ignorant first baby steps into its strange and frightening world, dropping hints and breadcrumbs along the way, all leading to the grand moment of revelation where the player's mind is blown as the scope of the universe expands to be far more vast than what they had ever suspected, becoming infinitely larger and more frightening in the process. Bloodborne (PS4) - Not merely a great accomplishment as a video game, but what is in my opinion one of the best works of cosmic horror in any medium. ![]()
